River courses Flashcards
What kind of valleys are in the upper course?
V shaped valleys
What kind of valleys in lower course?
U shaped valleys
Where does lateral erosion occur?
Middle and lower
What does the lower course of a river have because its flat?
Flood plains
What are features of the upper course?
Shallow
Steep
Narrow
Slow flow
Vertical erosion
What are features of middle course?
Flatter valley
Faster flow
Lateral erosion
Wider
What are some features of the lower course?
most energy
widest
flattest
deeper
meets the sea
What landforms in Upper?
Waterfalls
Gorges
V shaped valleys
Interlocking spurs
Why are upper course valleys V shaped?
River erodes vertically down
- causes sides to be attacked by weathering processes
- weakens them and causes mass movement
What are interlocking spurs?
Areas of more resistant rock in a V shaped valley were softer rock has eroded away
What are the steps to waterfall formation?
- Less resistant rock eroded by abrasion and hydraulic action
- Hydraulic action continues undercutting and creates plunge pool
- Overhang created collapses and waterfall retreats upstream
- steep sided gorge is left
Water does what on the outside bend of a meander?
Flows faster
What is a slip off slope?
Where a river deposits materail because the bed is shallower on the inside of a meander
What is a oxbow lake?
A small horse shoe shape lake
not connected to any other river channels
What landforms are found in the middle course?
oxbow lakes
Meanders
