Q

How is igneous rock formed?

A

Liquid hot Magma erupts from the volcano and cools on the surface of the earth, becoming rock. This is Igneous rock.

Q

How is metamorphic rock formed?

A

Sedimentary rock (from layers of dead organisms) get’s compressed. Whilst on the top layer of the sedimentary rock, more animals and plants die and get compressed, the bottom layer get pushed harder and hotter and eventually turn into a metamorphic rock.

Q

How is sedimentary rock formed?

A

Layers of dead animals and plants are compressed into layers for thousands of years before becoming a sedimentary rock.

Q

What rock shows layers?

A

Although they are both made out of layers, metamorphic rock doesn’t show its layers and sedimentary rock does.

Q

What is weathering?

A

This is how rocks on earth surface are broken up by the weather, plants or animals.

Q

What is freeze-thaw (which is a type of weathering)

A

Water enters gaps in rocks. -> Overnight the water freezes. -> Water expands when its frozen so it creates bigger cracks -> water evaporates leaving cracks in the rock.

Q

what is Onion skin weathering?

A

In hot areas it is hot during the day, and cold during the night. Rocks expand it heat and contract in cold (ness). This makes bits of the rocks break off.l

Q

What is biological weathering?

A

Plants roots penetrate into rocks, causing them to break. Also, animals can wear the rock away by walking on it.

Q

What are extrusive Igneous rocks?

A

Extrusive Igneous rocks is lava outside the volcano. These have fine granules/ crystals.

17
Q

What is intrusive Igneous rocks?

A

Intrusive Igneous rocks is lava inside the volcano. These have larger granules/ crystals.
