Elements:
Different parts of a roof and are made of members or components
What are the 5 main elements?
Gable, hip, valley, verge and eaves
Gable:
The triangular parton the end wall of a building that has a pitched roof
Hip:
Where two external sloping faces meet
Valley:
Where two internal sloping faces meet
Verge:
Where the roof overhangs at the gable
Eaves:
Lowest part of the roof surface that’s meets the outside walls
What are the 10 main members?
- Rafters: common, crown, cripple, valley, hip, jack, rafter.
- Ridge board
- Wall plate
- Purlins
Rafter:
Piece of timber that forms the roof.
Common rafter:
Main load bearing timbers
Hip rafter:
used where two external surfaces meet at an angle to provide fixing for jack rafters and transfers their load to the wall.
Crown rafter:
The centre rafter in a hip end that transfers the load to the wall
Jack rafter:
They close the gaps between common and hip and crown and hip rafters (wall plate to hip rafter)
Valley rafter:
Forming an internal angle acting as a spine for fixing cripple rafters
Cripple rafters:
Enclose the gap between common and valley rafters.
