Runoff Flashcards
What is runoff?
The various ways in which water moves across the land.
What are the 3 types of runoff?
-Surface run off
-Interflow
-Groundwater flow
What is overland flow?
Occurs when precipitation hits the groups and flows over the surface of the land, typically when the ground is saturated or precipitation exceeds infiltration rates.
What is interflow?
The lateral movement of water in the unsaturated zone, where the water is not yet completely saturated.
—> can augment surface run off + reach a stream quicker than groundwater flow.
What is groundwater flow?
Parts of the rivers discharge that is provided by groundwater seeping into the river channel.
—> occurs in significant rainy seasons + little evaporation.
What causes variation in runoff?
-Amount and intensity of rainfall
-Temperature
-Amount of vegetation
-Soil type
-Relief
