Why is the population decreasing?

A

High death rate— 15/1000 people per year, alcohol related deaths. Life expectancy 59 years men, 72 years.
Low birth rate— Women feels less than encouraged to have children. Birth rate 1.3.
Abortion— there are more abortions than births.

Importance of Lake Baikal

A

20% of worlds surface fresh water.
Oldest and deepest lake.
Most voluminous fresh water lake.
Great source of drinking water could provide 500l for 40 years to the whole world if needed.
Only there Baikal sea can be found only seal that lives entirely on fresh water.
Home to 1,700 species, 2/3 of which can only be found there.
Unesco World Heritage since 1996.

Threats of lake baikal

A

Water reached its lowest in past 60 years.
Polluted water— 7✖️amount of sulphur emission than it should. 2✖️the amount of mercury than what is considered safe.
Threats: nearby mining, oil and gas exploration, agricultural run off.
Plant paper just by the shore causing water and air pollution.

How is it being protected

A

2 year investigation
RFG investing in it therefore government putting interest and examples have been extracted.
$1.8 billion for the lake. Over 100 volunteers from Russia and around collected 450 tonnes of trash from the shoreline.
New technologies and educational programmes introduced to reduce the production of waste ecologists also offer to support initiatives of the residents, as well as local environmental projects.
