Q

What are key points about Positional Sanctification

A

When people come to faith in Christ, they are sanctified - they are no longer slaves to sin and dead in their transgressions but are set apart unto God, deemed righteous, and have eternal life.

One is justified through faith - the penalty of sin is paid for by Christ and we are deemed righteous by God. Christ’s sacrifice and righteousness are imbued unto a person as a result of their faith in Jesus Christ.

This position includes
- No longer deserving God’s wrath but justified, considered righteous (Romans 5:1, Romans 3:22, 2 Corinthians 5:21)

  • No longer slaves to sin but now in kingdom of the Son (Colossians 1:13, Romans 6:6-7)
  • No longer dead in trespasses, but alive with Christ (Ephesians 2:5)

-No longer spiritually dead but have eternal life (Romans 6:23)

-New creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)

  • Part of the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27)

-God’s special possession, holy people (1 Peter 2:9, Hebrews 10:10)

Q

What are key verses about being freed from slavery of sin?

A

Romans 6:6-7
For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

Romans 6:22-23
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Q

What are key points about Progressive Sanctification?

A

While we are positionally holy, we know that we still sin (1 John 1:10).

Progressive sanctification is what makes the people of God more and more like Jesus Christ.

  • Growing towards Christ Likeness - It is the same as growing in the Lord or spiritual maturity. Changing to be more like Jesus (Romans 8:29, 2 Peter 3:18)
  • Work of God - God started the work of making us like Christ, and He is continuing it. (Phillipians 1:6)
  • Pursued by believer. This type of sanctification is to be pursued by the believer earnestly (1 Peter 1:15)
17
Q

What is a key verse about progressive sanctification?

A

2 Peter 3:18
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:6
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

18
Q

What are key points about final sanctification?

A

The third and final stage of sanctification occurs in the future.

When believers die, their spirits go to be with Christ (2 Corinthians 5:6-8). Since nothing unclean can enter heaven (Revelation 21:27), we must be made perfect at that point.

The sanctification of the whole person—body, soul, and spirit—will finally be complete when the Lord Jesus returns and we receive glorified bodies (Philippians 3:21; 1 Corinthians 15:35-49, Colossians 3:4).

19
Q

What is key verse about final santification?

A

Phillipians 3: 21
And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

1 Corinthians 15:49
And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.
