sapir whorf hypothesis Flashcards
sapir whorf hypothesis?
think about concept - express in words - if culture does not have a word for an idea or object - cannot understand concept in same way than to cultures if they did have a word
linguistic determinism?
structure of language shapes how we think
hard version?
can’t even think about the ideas we do not have the words for
soft version?
range of words we have for objects changes our perception of them
example- the strong version?
franz boaz discovered how one injuit had 4 different words for snow - increased to 7 and there might be more - 27 words for snow
example - weak version?
inut had specific words for instance “wet falling snow” - imagine what the types of snow may look like - even though there are not specific words for these in our culture - having these words helps it easier to distinguish between the different kinds of snow - words help to “carve up” world
sapir whorf hypothesis - evaluation?
used to explain the cognitive underpeformance of poorer students - lacking complex vocab - form teachers into designing classes that improve vocab - improve general understanding of the world
differences of the number of words for objects - the way the languages are used may make perception limited - snow in english can be used with description words to add meaning like the word “soft”
