Literalist
A person who interprets the text exactly as it is written
Contextualist (Catholics)
a person who interprets the text based on its context (who wrote it, why the wrote, when it was written Culture, worldview)
Context of gen 1 ( an oral account of creation)
- Developed during the Babylonian exile
- these people did not want to lose their “religion” in a foreign land
• felt far away from God because of the promise land - scribes began to write down their history
- since most people were literalist they remembered the account because of repeated words + patterns (reflects their worldview)
Truths found in gen 1
- there is only one God

- God created everything good
- God made the Sabbath day holy
- God made men and women in God
Context of gen 2
- This account was written before genesis one it was told during the time of King Solomon.
- Solomon made just law created a successful economic and built temples. Peoples were doing really well during this time period
- the mans occupation was farming, they felt God was close
Truths found in gen 2
- God desire to be close to human (God it is the garden)
- humans are made of divine breath and earth (God breath into the soul of the earth)
- God shares gods powers with human example human names of the creation
- men and women are equal
Genesis 3
Answers the question if God created everything good why is the evil in the world? this account explain evil entered the world with the first person send the serpent tempted Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge and good and evil disobeying God. Eve and encouraged Adams eat the fruit they wanted to be like God entered the garden they did it and later blamed each other God punish each of them sent themfrom the garden. Genesis 3 explains the First sin

Is the accounts of Cain and Abel both made an offering to God and God seem to favor able offering tenet get got jealous and killed his brother got a banish keen and made him a wander guard to place a mark of protection on Cain this account teaches us that our consequences when we sin
