A

experiences in the slums lead to ,Awful conditions, overcrowding, poor sanitation, which lead to outbreaks of diseases such as typhus cholera and diptheria.

They were openly discriminated against because of their religion.
Shops would openly say they were not accepting Irish or sometimes catholic workers.

Catholic - resentment/ religion

A

The Irish drank and gambled to give light of their situation. Scots thought of the Irish as drunks and blamed them for their circumstances.

they didn’t like the high number of Irish looking for work. They reduced the pay which was given as they would do the same job for less.

Catholic churches opened around the country which were a place to socialise and kept their religion identity alive.
The church started football clubs which provided social activities for catholics to feel involved in

Protestant - experiences in and workplace

A

Got on well with Scots as Scotland was a protestant country. Some workplaces would advertise for Irish Protestant to move to Scotland for work.

Partly down to religion, they were better skilled and educated. These jobs had higher wages. This meant they had better opportunities for a job

Protestant - religion

A

They formed Orange Orders which were similar to the Irish ones. They helped celebrate Protestant Irish identity.

Lodges were built which were places where they could meet with one another. They hosted weddings and funerals too. 12 lodges in Glasgow by 1835.

A

Some scots disliked jews becuase they were always working on a sunday. some scots also didnt like jews accepting low paid wages.

some jews were able to access froms of higher education such as universitys. this allowed jews to gain access to high jobs of power such as lawyers and teachers.

A

Synagogues were built quickly and jews could be buried in their own cemeteries.
Teaching was often done in synagogue to teach about the religion.

The number of jewish people were small so their community was kept to themselves
Jews looked after one another so they didn’t put a threat on the scottish government

They were known to live in the gorbals area in glasgow because it was cheap
Therefore, conditions were bad such as overcrowding, poor sanitation and constant disease threats.

A

Made businesses selling ice cream and fish and chips and cafes. whiist others sold items door to door to gain more money

Italians spoke their own language so scots thought of it as rude as they weren’t trying to fit in
Some got called names on the streets as they were catholic

A

The shops they opened became very popular within the scottish community
Scots felt the ice cream shops were a better way to get young people together than in pubs

Italians kept within their own community so they did not feel threatened
Italians sent money home so the scots knew they would leave eventually

lithuanian - workplace and housing

A

They worked in the heavy industries such as coal, iron and steel. They soon opened their own shops once time moved.

Scots believed that the lithuanians were brought to stop strikes and drive wages down so this meant scots were suspicious of them. this caused scots to become hostile towards them.

Jewish Lithuanians lived in the gorbals
They faced overcrowding and poor sanitary conditions such as the Jews faced

lithuanian - identity/resentment

A

Many lithuanians had to change their names due to constant bulling from scots. for example joseph became joe.

After WW1, they were made to register as ‘aliens’ even though they had lived their for 30 years and served with Scots. They were still considered Russians and many were sent back to live there

As people left after the war, the community shrank a lot so they were almost forced to join nin with the Scottish community
They started learning english and attending higher education
