Section D Flashcards
Which colours does litmus turn?
Acidic-Red
Basic-Blue
Neutral-Purple
Which colours does methyl orange turn?
Strongly acidic-Red
Mildly Acidic-Orange
Basic-Yellow
What colours does phenolphthalein turn?
Acidic-Colourless
Basic-Red
What colour does pH paper/universal indicator turn?
VIBGYOR from basic to acidic
How do acids react with water?
They dissociate to form H+ ions and negative ions/radicals
How do acids react with metals?
Acid+Metal—->Salt+Hydrogen gas
How do acids react with metal carbonates?
Acid+Metal carbonate—>Salt+Water+Carbon dioxide
Which chloride salts are insoluble?
Silver & Lead(II) chloride
Which sulphate salts are insoluble?
Barium, calcium & lead(II) sulfate
Which carbonate salts are soluble?
Sodium, potassium and ammonium carbonate
What happens when an acid reacts with a base?
Neutralisation reaction;
Acid+Base—>Salt+Water
How are insoluble salts usually made?
Precipitation reactions
How is the heat given out during a exothermic reaction measured?
Heat given off =
Mass x Specific heat x temperature rise
What is dynamic equilibrium?
When the rate of the forward and backward reactions are equal, the reaction is said to be in a state of dynamic equilibrium.
How does increasing or decreasing the pressure affect the equilibrium?
Increase- Shifts to side where less molecules are present
Decrease-Shifts to side more molecules are produced
