structured interview?

A

predetermined questions, questionnaire but face to face or on the phone. No deviation from the original list of questions and answered in real time meaning the researcher asks the question and respondent replies

Q

strengths of interviews?

A
  • deeper insight = semi/unstructured, interviewer tailors questions to each respondent which allows for more detail, feelings and thoughts to be gathered
  • easily repeated = for structured interviews because questions are standardised and can be easily compared and analysed

Q

weakness of interviews?

A
  • sample = may not be representative of the population therefore cannot generalise
  • interviewer comparability = in the same interviewer conducts same interviews on different days or behaves differently this could produce low reliability in your data
  • expensive = to conduct unstructured interview as you need a well trained, skilled researcher to produce effective interview

Q

closed questions?

A

range on answers fixed (eg 5 possible answers)
- easy to analyse
- may select an answer that doesn’t fully represent what they’re feeling
this produces quantitative data

Q

open questions?

A

infinite range of answers, may get 50 different answers. produces qualitative data which is more difficult to summarise and draw conclusions from and clear patterns

Q

strengths of questionnaires?

A
  • large sample = can be distributed to large group of people which is cheap and quick
  • more valid = respondent contemplates questions in their own time by themselves therefore more inclined to tell the truth and reveal personal information
  • easily repeated = questions standardised allowing easy to analyse and compare

Q

weakness of questionnaires?

A
  • sample = Amy not be representative of the population therefore g=cannot generalise, depending on who you give the questionnaire to
  • who? = do we know who is answering the questions, who is it intended for this could create unreliable data
  • no one to help = is respondent doesn’t understand the question there is nobody to clarify the issue.
