Sequence of Tense Flashcards
P –> present/future tense
S –> any tense
P–> Past tense
S –> any past tense:
simultaneous = same tense
anteriority :
P = past perfect - S. = past simple
posteriority = future in the past (would + be)
exceptions:
1) general truths, habitual actions, quotations, facts –> present tense
2) comparative (than) –> any tense
3) attributive –> any tense
ex. she met the men who will lead the party
4) causative -> any tense
she didn’t call because she will meet him tonight
5) adjectival –> who, whom, whose, where, when, which, that, and why as connectors to the subordinative
P –> future tense
S–> present tense = simultaneous
S –> present perfect = anteriority
subordinate clause introduced with by “as if” or “as though”
present time –> past simple
he talks as if we were mad
past time –> past perfect
he loved me as though I had been his son
when a clause is introduced with “as if” the verb is plural with all the subjects
…as if she were…
