What are stereotypes and what is the function?
Generalisations about specific social groups and members of those groups.
Energy saving, allows anticipation, avoids information overflow and right most of the time.
What are the drawbacks of stereotyping?
Overlooks diversity, focuses on negative traits and resistant to change. Can lead to prejudice.
Define prejudice and discrimination
Prejudice - prejudgment often based on negative stereotypes
Discrimination - behaving differently with people from different groups because of their membership.
When are we more likely to rely on prejudice?
Under time pressure
Fatigued
Suffering information overload
What is the most age sensitive component of intelligence?
Processing speed. Unpredictable.
