How do you check the brakes are working correctly?
Test them. Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Test before starting. Vehicles should not move from side to side.
How to find the information for the recommended tyre pressures?
Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check tyre pressures when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps.
How to make sure head restraint is correctly adjusted?
The rigid part of the head restraint should be at least level with the eyes or the top of the ears. Can be as close or as far away from the back of the head as is comfortable. NB: Some head restraints may not be adjustable.
How would you check tyres have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe?
No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
How would you check the headlights and tail lights are working?
Operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary), and then walk round vehicle.
How would you know there’s a problem with ABS?
Warning light should illuminate if there is a fault.
Check the direction indicators are working?
You would operate the switch and then walk round the vehicle.
Check the brake lights are working on this car?
Operate the brake pedal, make use of window reflections, garage doors, or ask someone to help.
How would you check the power assisted steering is working before the start of the journey?
If the steering becomes heavy the system may not be working properly.
Gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained while the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate.
Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.
When do you need the rear fog lights and when would you use them?
Operate switch. Check warning light is on. Used when visibility is severely damaged by the weather, but this is the only time you can use them.
Switch headlights from dipped to main beam?
Operate switch, check with main beam warning light.
Open the bonnet and how would you check the engine oil level. How would you check the engine has sufficient oil?
Identify dipstick/oil level indicator describe checking of oil level against the minimum/maximum markers only when engine is cold.
Open the bonnet. How would you check the engine coolant level. How would you check the engine has the correct level?
Identify high/low level markings on header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, describe how to top up to correct level when engine is too hot.
Open bonnet. Check you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?
Identify reservoir, check level against high/low markings.
