Why did the invasion actually help Castro ? ( this is a consequence of the bay of pigs)

A
  • He had been losing support before the invasion due to the increasingly worsening economic situation of Cuba
  • Many Cubans had fled to the US during this time
  • However Castors position in Cuba became stronger due to the failure of the invasion, further to this the threat of the US invasion united many people
  • The US subsequently lost support in the rest of Latin America

What did the invasion mean for Kennedy ?

A

It was a great embarrassment for Kennedy and made him more determined to remove Castro
He set up operation mongoose to remove Castro from power which was headed by the CIA
The US involvement in the bay of pigs pushed Castro further towards soviet influence
By the end of 1961 Cuba was communist

What did the invasion mean for soviet- Cuban relations ?

A

By the end of 1961
- there where soviet military advises and combatants stationed in Cuba
- Khrushchev saw the move into Cub as the start of the spread of communism into Latin America
- he was concerned by US missile bases in both Italy and Turkey and thus saw scuba as a restoration of power
- he could now claim to be defending Cuba from future attacks the USA and disgruntled Cuban Exiles
