Economic lot size
How many items should be manufactured in batches to minimize the cost of production.
The most economically viable cost is the intersection between inventory cost and setup cost.
Spare parts management for lumpy demand
Risk-based management:
Given the acceptance of a certain risk of running out of stocks, should we stock spare parts? If so, how many?
Uses a Poisson distribution with random failure calculate the inventory size needed for not running out of spare parts. To apply this we need data: failure rate, number of machines using part and coverage period. The advantage is that it is easy to use. It does not consider normal storage cost. Easy to use, but do not take inventory or backorder costs into consideration.
Minimum global cost:
Which is the inventory level that minimizes the total costs?
Finds the intersection of the inventory and backorder cost (lowest global cost). Need failure rate, number of machines, coverage period, unitary inventory cost.
Intersection between Inventory cost and backorder cost.
