Skeletons Flashcards
3 functions of a skeleton?
- Support internal structure
- Protects organs
- Muscles contract and move bones
3 types of skeletal systems and examples
- Hydrostatic (soft-bodied animals, pressure of fluid) jellyfish
- Exoskeleton (outer layer, made of chitin) snail
- Endoskeleton (internal structures, bone/cartilage) human
3 types of muscle
- Smooth muscle (digestive system)
- Cardiac muscle (heart)
- Skeletal muscles (enable us to move)
What are antagonistic muscles?
Muscles that are in pairs that work together to pull in opposite directions to move
What is muscle fatigue?
Poisonous waste product (lactic acid) is made and causes pain and muscles stop working. Comes from muscle cells needing food from process of respiration
Ligament’s function?
Attaches bone to bone
Cartilage’s function?
Reduces friction + acts as shock absorber
Tendon’s function?
Joins muscle to bone
Synovial fluid’s function?
Allows bones to slide
Synovial membrane’s function?
Produces synovial fluid
3 main types of joint?
- Fixed/immoveable (bind skull together after birth)
- Slightly moveable (between ribs&breast bone allows chest to expand + contract during breathing)
- Moveable (hips+shoulders - ball&socket and elbows+knees- hinge)
Are longer bones stronger or weaker than shorter bones?
As the length of the bone decreases, the mass it can support increases
