Gross motor skills
Involve the use of large muscle groups and place less emphasis on precision. For example, running, swimming, jumping.
Fine motor skills
Is the recruitment of smaller muscle groups associated with movements requiring precision. For example, darts, writing, snooker.
Discrete motor skills
Have a clear beginning and end. Examples include kicking a footy, tennis serve or netball pass.
Continuous motor skills
Do not have a distinct beginning or end. Common examples are running, swimming or cycling.
Serial motor skills
Involves several discrete skills being performed in a sequence. A gymnastics floor routine is a good example.
Closed motor skills
Are performed in surroundings where the athlete has the greatest amount of control over the performance environment. This includes any external factors that may have an impact on the result of the performance. Taking a free throw in basketball is an example.
Open motor skills
Are the skills performed in a less predictable environment. Conditions can be constantly changing and the athlete has little or no control of the environment.
