How the voltage of the supply changes with time

What will the trace of an AC current plugged into a CRO look like?
A
The trace goes up and down in a regular pattern- sometimes it is positive, sometimes it is negative

How can potential differences be calculated from the trace of an AC current?
A
The vertical height of any point = input voltage at that point
Measuring the height of the trace, gives you the voltage (potential difference) of the AC supply
