Soc 15 - Cardio Vascular Syste/ Soc 16 Structure Or Blood Vessels And Blood Dirtubtion Flashcards
(24 cards)
What makes up the cardio vascular system
Formed by heart and blood vessels
What are the 3 main functions of the cardio vascular system
Transport oxygen
Helps blood clot
Regulates body temperature
What is transporting oxygen
The heart pumps oxygen round the body to remove carbon dioxide to the working muscles, the harder the muscles work the more the heart works
What is blood clotting
Blood contains platelets which help our blood form scabs which help stop bleeding and healing
What is controlling the body’s temperature
Blood diverting to the surface to allow more heat to radiate out, if you get to hot the blood vessels close to the skin get bigger (vasodilation)
What is vascular shunt
When blood is diverted from certain areas of the body to others, so that muscles have an adequate supply of oxygen
What do red blood cells do
Transport oxygenated blood And deoxygenated blood
What is the first phase of the heart beat known as and what happens
Systolic, pumped from atria into ventricles
What is the second phase of the heart beat and what is it
Diastolic phase, heart is relaxing and refilling with the atria with blood
What can having a high blood pressure do
Cause heart attacks, strokes and diabetes
What do white blood cells do
Contains transparent cells, they help fight of diseases
Why are white blood cells important
Helps fight diseases which will mean an athlete can train/perform
Why are red blood cells important
Transport oxygen to working muscles so they don’t fatigue quickly and you can perform for longer
What are platelets
Formed in bone marrow, tiny fragments that help clot blood and stop bleeding
What is the importance of platelets
First line of defence against cuts, if a performer gets a skin abrasion platelets will help clot to stop the bleeding
What is importance of plasma
To take oxygen, nutrients, hormones and proteins to parts of the body that need it
What is serotonin
Hormone that triggers the clotting process
What is Immune system
The structures and process in your body that stops diseases
What is antibody
Chemical that destroys a pathogen
What is Leukocyte
White blood cell
What is erythrocyte
Red blood cell
What is haemoglobin
A red protein in the blood that transports oxygen
What is anaemia
A condition where there is a lack of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood
What is thrombokinase
A substance involved in blood clotting
