Social Learning Approach Pg 84 And 85 Flashcards
Modelling and imitation
Modelling occours when a role model performs a behaviour observed by someone else
The observer imitates the role models behaviour
What is vicarious reinforcement?
An observer witnesses a role models behaviour being rewarded
Give 2 forms of social learning
Vicarious reinforcement and modelling
Why do we identify with peers?
Our peers are similar age to us and have similar interests and experiences l.
We identify with peers because they are similar to us so we imitate them.
Social norms
Peers establish what is desirable or ‘normal’ for a group. E.g smoking
Role models in health education:peers
Peer leaders are popular students that are used as role models in school-based health education programmes
They model healthy lifestyle values and health related behaviours for others to imitate.
They have credibility with students and teachers
Role models in health education: celebrities
Celebrities are sometimes used in health campaigns that transmit behaviour using the media.
Celebrities are imitated bcz they have status and glamour.
Strength
Modelling can explain how healthy behaviours develop
In one study (cullen et al) children are more likely to try new food if they see adult eating it.
Therefore parents who model gealthy behavipurs are more likely to raise chuldren who also engage in those behaviours.
Weakness
Some role models in health education are ineffective
Health educators e.g doctors and nurses are officially role models if healthy behaviours but some lead unhealthy lifestyles. This may lack credibility with patients who may not follow their advice.
Suggests that midelling begaviour in health education is more complex
