social learning theory Flashcards
what’s modelling
learning behaviour by observing another performing behaviour
imitation
using someone as model and copying their behaviour, usually child learns from parent
identification
individual relates to model and feel theyre similar
adopts attitude/behaviour as they want to be associated with person or group
what a live model
a parent, teacher, peer group
what’s a symbolic model
someone portrayed in the media, a chapter on TV
vicarious reinforcement
individual observes another person behaviour, watching the consequence and mimicking if behaviour has desired consequence
WALTERS said children who observed model rewarded for aggressive behaviour were likely to imitate than children who observed someone getting punished
mediational processes
coginitive process involved in learning and production of new behaviour
ATTENTION AND RETENTION
bandura said for social learning to take place the observer must form mental representation of behaviour displayed by model, and see for positive and negative consequences
procedure of banduras bobo doll study
half children were exposed to adult models being aggressive with life size bobo dolls, and other half exposed to non aggressive models, the aggressive models were physically aggressive, striking it, and verbal aggressive such as POW. they were also shown attractive toys that they weren’t allowed to play with then taken to the room with bobo doll
the dining of bobo doll bandura
observed aggressive model were psychically and verbally aggressive resembling the model they repeated verbal responses, kids who observed non aggressive model, showed no aggression towards bobo doll. th
a strength
social learning has useful applications, akers suggests probability of someone engaging in criminal behaviour increases model they were exposed to models who commit criminal behaviour.
a weakness
a problem of complexity, social learning theorist would emphasise in modelling
