Q

What are the opportunities for using social media in healthcare (clinician, patient, and mental health perspective)?

A

clinician’s perspective:
- love it for BLOGGING to talk about their thoughts
-doesn’t require 3+ years to publish like writing a peer-reviewed journal
-allows you to connect with people around the world
-good for younger generation

Patient’s perspective:
- gives them access to their own medical records –> “open-notes”
- better to be on the same page for doctor-patient communication when it comes to discussing their health

Mental Health perspective:
- “if we’re not sharing it, we’re carrying it”
- let’s us talk it out!

Q

Describe 5 considerations before using social media in healthcare

A
  1. Security risk
    - has to do with personal health information in regards to patients private medical information
  2. Spread of false information
    - not all info on the internet is true, therefore leading to patients “misdiagnosing” themselves
  3. using the internet to self-diagnose
    - lack of quality control of content
-can put patients at risk if they believe what’s online and try to treat it on their own without seeking professional help
-seek the internet before a doctor, decreasing patients in clinics

4 . lack of control over content
-not many quality checks done online

  1. time consuming
    - having to set up an account, keep posting regularly, making sure to respond to patients regularly
-seems to be easier to have face-to-face interaction!
