Solids Liquids And Gases Flashcards
Describe a liquid~ give 4 points
- Particles are close together but move freely and randomly
- Doesn’t have it’s own shape ~ takes the shape of its container ~ can flow
- Relatively high density due to the small gals between the particles
- They cannot be compressed (they have a fixed volume)
Describe a solid ~ give 4 points
- Particles are held together in a fixed position ~ they vibrate but are not free to move
- It keeps it’s own shape and doesn’t flow
- It has a relatively high density due to there being no gaps between the particles
- They cannot be compressed (they have a fixed volume)
Describe a gas ~ give 4 points
- Particles in a gas move randomly, freely and quickly ~ they can flow
- Particles are spread out and can fill their container
- Low density due to the large gaps between particles
- They can be compressed (their volume can be changed)
What is the process from a solid to a liquid called?
Melting
What is freezing?
It’s the process where a liquid becomes a solid
What is the process from a liquid to a gas called?
Boiling / Evaporating
What is condensing?
The process where a gas turns into a liquid
Ruth leaves a bottle of perfume open in her bedroom and then lies on her bed on the other side of the room to read a magazine. The smell of the perfume spreads throughout the room.
Using ideas about particles explain why Ruth could smell the perfume after a few minutes
Because when the particles spread out they become less concentrated
Wayne used a pump to suck all of the air out of a large metal can. After the air was removed the can collapsed.
What do air particles do that cause pressure?
They move randomly and collide into objects putting force on the object
