Spinal Cord & Meninges Flashcards
What is the order of meninges from superficial to deep?
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Pia mater
What is the dural sac?
The dural sac is the dura that surrounds the spinal cord.
What is a root sleeve?
A root sleeve is the dura that surrounds the spinal nerve roots.
What are the denticulate ligaments?
They are an extension of the pia mater that anchors the spinal cord horizontally. Prevent lateral displacement
What is the filum terminale?
The filum terminale is an extension of the pia mater that anchors the spinal cord longitudinally and connects to the coccyx
Where is the cervical enlargement located?
The cervical enlargement is located from C4-T1
Where is the lumbosacral enlargement?
The lumbosacral enlargement is at T11-S1
What is the conus medullaris?
The conus medullaris is the most distal bulbous part of the spinal cord.
What does the filum terminale go through?
The filum terminale goes through the sacral canal
What is the cauda equina?
The cauda equina is a bundle of spinal nerve roots that arises inferior to L1
What are the filum terminale and the denticulate ligaments made of?
They are made of pia mater
Where is the conus medullaris located?
The conus medullaris is located at L1-L2
Where is an epidural placed and what do you go through?
An epidural is placed between L3-L5 and you go through the ligamentum flava and injected into epidural fat.
Where is a spinal tap usually done? What tissues do you go through?
A spinal tap is usually done between L3-L5 in the subarachnoid space. You go through the ligamentum flava, the epidural space, dura mater, and arachnoid mater.
What is the subarachnoid space filled with?
CSF
