Spinal Mechanic Flashcards
What is neutral position
Neutral is defined as the position of the spine in which the facets are idling between flexion and extension
In the position of extension are facets open or closed
Closed
What motion is associated with lateral flexion
Spinal rotation
When in flexion are facets open or closed
Open
What is type 1 spinal mechanics
When side bending to one side then the vertebrae will rotate in the opposite direction
What is fryette’s second law
When side bending spinal rotation will be to the same side
What is the third law of spinal mechanics
When motion is introduced in one plane , the motion in the other two planes is reduced. For example if rotation is restricted then side bending and flexion/extension will also be reduced.
What law of mechanics does the lumbar spine usually follow.
Type 1
Lateral flexion with rotation to the opposite direction.
What law does the cervical spine follow
Mostly type 2 lateral flexion with rotation to the same side apart from the AAJ, which is only rotation.
What law does the thoracic spine follow
Usually type 1 unless there is dysfunction.
What is the usual form of dysfunction within the spine concerning spinal mechanics
Scoliosis
If the facet joints of the vertebrae are closed what state are they in flexion or extension
Extension
According to Type 2 mechanics the spine rotates and side bends in which direction?
Rotates and side bends the same direction.
According to Fryette’s Law does type 1refer to neutral or non neutral spinal mechanics?
Neutral
What is neutral position
Idling between flexion and extension
