The Old Howard (history)
“Boston’s Most Celebrated Theatre,” the Howard Athenaeum, opened in
1845 and for over a century was one of the most popular playhouses in the
Boston area. Many great actors, opera singers, comedians, and burlesque
dancers made their way through “The Old Howard” during its time,
including a young John Wilkes Booth (before he assassinated that Lincoln
guy). After the turn of the century, The Old Howard increasingly devoted
more of its stage to burlesque until the Boston vice squad shut it down
in 1953 for indecency. Navy men from the nearby Charlestown base and
Harvard students frequented the theatre often for the strip tease, including
JFK (shocker). The Harvard Class of 1937 even made popular burlesque
star Ann Corio an honorary member.

Delgado (history)
Jose Elogio Delgado was the first South American to receive a degree from
Harvard (or any other US university) in 1858. Our use of Aguardiente in
this cocktail salutes his achievements in helping to promote education
on our continent (yes North and South America are recognized as one
continent!)
