A

It is a set of written regulations issued by professionals that explains how people working should behave.

A

All professionals must follow codes of conduct and practice. Social workers and social care workers under NISCC and nurses under the NMC.

Social Care Workers

A

NISCC
All social care workers who are registered must follow the Northern Ireland Social Care Council’s (NISCC) Standards of Conduct and Practice.

The content of NISCC’s Standards of Conduct and Practice for Social Care Workers
As part of its roles and responsibilities, the NISCC is required to produce and publish standards of conduct and practice expected of social care workers.

•The standards of conduct describe the values, attitudes and behaviours expected of
social care workers in their day to day work.

•The standards of practice outline the knowledge and skills required for competent practice.

Both sets of standards combine to provide a baseline against which a social care worker’s conduct and practice will be judged by the service user/employer & the public.

Standards of Conduct

  1. A social care worker, must protect the rights and promote the interests and wellbeing of service users and carers.
  2. A social care worker, must strive to establish and maintain the trust and confidence of service users and carers.
  3. A social care worker, must promote the autonomy of service users while safeguarding them as far as possible from danger or harm.
  4. A social care worker, must respect the rights of service users while seeking to ensure that their behaviour does not harm themselves or other people.
  5. A social care worker, must uphold public trust and confidence in social care services.
  6. A social care worker, must be accountable for the quality of work and take responsibility for maintaining and improving their knowledge and skills

Standards of Practice
A social care worker should:

  1. Understand the main duties and responsibilities of your own role within the context of the organisation in which you work.
  2. Be able to communicate effectively.
  3. Deliver person-centred care and support which is safe and effective.
  4. Support the safeguarding of individuals.
  5. Maintain health and safety at work.
  6. Develop yourself as a social care worker

Social Workers

A

NISCC
All social care workers who are registered must follow the Northern Ireland Social Care Council’s (NISCC) Standards of Conduct and Practice.

Values in the Standards for Social Workers

-Respect the rights, dignity (self-respect) of everyone

-Treat people respectfully and with kindness

-Support and help service users to be independent (do things for themselves)

-Always have the needs and wishes of Service Users at the centre of what they do

-Make sure that care given is safe and of good quality

-Make sure everyone is treated fairly and included

Standards of Conduct
These are the rules for how a social worker must behave towards service users, carers and the people they work with.

A social worker must:

  1. Protect the rights and support the safety and well-being of service users and carers
  2. Earn and keep the trust of service users and carers
  3. Support service users to be independent and safe
  4. Respect service users’ rights and keep them safe from hurting themselves or other people
  5. Behave well so that the public (people who live in the community) trust and respect social work services
  6. Make sure that they do a good job and keep learning new skills to do a good job

Standards of Practice
These are the rules for how a social worker must do their job well and keep improving their skills and knowledge for their job.

A social worker must:

  1. Understand their job role and what they are responsible for
  2. Keep up to date with the information and skills they need to do a good job
  3. Learn new skills and ways to be a better social worker
  4. Make sure the work they do is of good quality
  5. Communicate with service users and carers, and involve them in plans for their care
  6. Work with others to understand the needs, risks and rights of the people they work with
  7. Keep service users safe and support them to achieve their goals
  8. Help to make themselves and others better at their job
