States Of Matter Flashcards
List the three states of matter
•solid
•liquid
•gas
List the four gas laws
•Boyle’s law
•Gay Lusac’s law
•Charles Law
•Avogadros law
Describe Boyle’s law
This law states that when temperature is held constant, pressure and volume are inversely proportional
State Charles Law
This law states that when pressure is held to constant temperature and volume are directly proportional.
State Gay Lusac’s law
States that when volume is constant pressure and temperature are directly proportional.
State Avogadro’s gas law
This law states that when pressure and temperature are held constant the number of moles is directly proportional to the volume of a gas.
What is the Ideal Gas Equation?
PV=nRT
Define triple point
This is when a substance has its solid, liquid and gas phases in equilibrium at a given pressure and temperature
Define critical point
This is when the liquid and gas phases are indistinguishable
Define normal boiling point
This refers to the temperature and pressure where a liquid changes to a gas at 1 a.t.p
Define normal melting point
This refers to the temperature and pressure where a solid changes to a liquid at 1 a.t.p
During phase changes, what is the energy used for?
Energy is used to break bonds and not to increase kinetic energy therefore temperature does not change
What are phase diagrams used for?
Used to depict the behavior of matter based on pressure and temperature
What are heating and cooling curves used for?
Used to depict the changes of state based on heat and temperature
