Structure and bonding Flashcards
What do elements react to form?
Compounds by gaining, losing or sharing electrons.
What is Covalent bonding?
The attractions between two atoms that share one or more pairs of electrons.
What is an ion?
A charged particle produced by the loss or gain of elections.
What is Ionic bonding?
When an atom gains or loses an electron.
What do elements in “group” 1 have?
1 electron in its outer shell.
What is a “giant structure”?
Network of covalently bonded atoms.
How are ionic compounds held?
By strong forces between the oppositely charged ions so it is held through forces of attraction.
What does the ratio of ions in the structure of an ionic compound depend on?
Charges on the ions.
How do we represent atoms and ions?
Using dots and crosses.
What do the charges in ionic compounds do?
Cancel each other out.
What does the number of covalent bonds an atom forms depends on?
Number of electrons it needs to achieve a stable electronic structure.
What do substances containing covalent bonds consist of?
Simple molecules, but some have giant covalent structures.
What are the atoms in closely packed metals arranged like?
Regular layers.
What are the electrons in the highest energy level like?
Delocalised so they can move freely between atoms. The strong electrostatic forces between these electrons and the positively charged metal ions hold the metal together.
