Many people do not think they are addicted, as long as they are enjoying themselves.
Addictions are both harmful to the person with the addiction and the people around them.
Drug Categories
Drugs are categorised by their
- addictiveness (hard/soft)
- effects (stimulans/uppers, depressants/downers, hallucinogens)
- origin and form of availability (raw plant, refined, synthetic)
- acceptance before the law (legal drugs, illegal drugs)
Socially acceptable drugs and their effects.
Alcohol
- Short term effects*: slurred speech, problems with coordination, unsteadiness, impaired attention, loss of inhibition, insomnia
- Long term effects*: liver damage, nervous system damage, impotence
- Symptoms*: anxiety, depression, shakes
