Superficial Back Flashcards
What is another name for the superficial back muscles
The superficial posterior axioappendicular muscles
What is the general function of the superficial back muscles
To provide direct attachment between the trunk and upper limb
What are the primary muscles of the back
The trapezius and latissimus dorsi
Where do the deep axioappendicular muscles lie
Deep to the trapezius
What are the deep axioappendicular muscles
Levator scapulae, rhombiod minor and rhombiod major
Describe the innervation of the trapezius
The spinal accessory nerve. Also recieves proprioceptor fibres from C3 and C4
Describe the innervation of the latissimus dorsi
The thoracodorsal nerve
Describe the innervation of the levator scapulae
The dorsal scapular nerve and C3 and C4 nerves
Describe the innervation of the rhombiod minor
The dorsal scapular nerve
Describe the innervation of the rhomboid major
The dorsal scapular nerve
Describe the action of the descending (superior) part of the trapezius
Elevates the scapula
Describe the action of the middle part of the trapezius
Retracts the scapula (pulls it posteriorly)
Describe the action of the ascending (inferior) part of the trapezius
Depresses the scapula and lowers the shoulder
Describe the combined action of the descending and ascending parts of the trapezius
Together they rotate the glenoid cavity (shoulder blade) superiorly
