Surface Phenomena Flashcards

1
Q

What is surface tension

A

Measurements of cohesive energy present at an interface
- It gives effect within the surface layer of a liquid that causes the layer to behave as an elastic sheet/ behave as an elastic rubber membrane under tension

Q

Example for surface tension

A

Walking on water
:Water strider can walk on water because their weight is not enough to penetrate the surface

Flooring of paper clip
:Even though clips is density compared to water but it still can be floated if it is placed carefully on water. If the water was agitated the clips will shrink slowly

Soaps and detergent
:It lowers the surface tension of the water which allows the water to penetrate the materials more easily

Q

Capillary action

A

result of a combination of adhesion and cohesive.
-Ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces, without the assistance of, and in opposition to external forces like gravity
