Synapses Flashcards
1
Q
what is a synpase?
A
- the junction between two neurones OR a neurone and effector
2
Q
what are the key structures of a synapse:
A
- synaptic cleft
- presynpatic neurone
- postsynaptic neurone
- synaptic knob
- synaptic vesicles
- neurotransmitter receptors?
3
Q
what is a synaptic cleft?
A
- the gap which separates the axon of one neurone from the dendrite of the next neurone
4
Q
what is a presynaptic neurone?
A
- neurone along which the impulse has arrived
5
Q
what is a postsynaptic neurone?
A
- neurone that receives the neurotransmitter
6
Q
what is the synaptic knob?
A
- the swollen end of the presynaptic neurone
- contains many mitochondria and ER to enable it to manufacture neurotransmitters
7
Q
what are synaptic vesicles?
A
- vesicles that contain neurotransmitters
- fuse with the presynaptic membrane and release their contents into the synaptic cleft
8
Q
what are neurotransmitter receptors?
A
- receptor molecules which the neurotransmitter binds to in the post synpatic membrane
9
Q
what are the two groups of neurotransmitters?
A
- excitatory
- inhibitory
10
Q
what is an excitatory neurone?
A
- result in depolarisation of the post synaptic neurone
- action potential triggered if threshold is met
- e.g acetylcholine
11
Q
what is an inhibitory neurotransmitter?
A
- result in hyperpolarisation of the postsynaptic membrane
- prevents action potential being triggered
- e.g. GABA
