Systemic Flashcards
Pathogen - Can be many, many things, very frequently gram negative bacteria
Symptoms - Nosocomial, hypotension, blood vessel collapse, fever, lymphangitis, medication can cause release of endotoxin (gram negative) and worsen
Septic Shock (Tons of bacteria)
Pathogen - Gram positive cocci, chains, beta hemolytic
Symptoms - Post birth in mother, chills, fever, abdominal distention and pain, bloody vaginal discharge
Puerperal Fever/Childbed Fever (Strep. Pyogenes)
Pathogen - Gram positive cocci, chains
Symptoms - In child soon after birth, fever, respiratory distress, lethargy
Group B Strep. Disease (Strep. agalactica)
Pathogen - Gram positive cocci, chains, beta hemolytic
Symptoms - Sequelae/Secondary infection of other diseases, fever, arthritis, rash, mitral valve damage, nodules on elbows
Rheumatic Fever (Strep. pyogenes)
Pathogen - Typically gram positive cocci, but can be many things
Symptoms - Fever, malaise, bacteremia, heart murmur,
Bacterial Endocarditis/Myocarditis/Pericarditis (Typically Strep. or Staph.)
Pathogen - Gram positive rods, spore forming, facultative anaerobe
Symptoms - Zoonotic though not spread by contact, Cutaneous not typically lethal, respiratory very lethal, Intestinal sometimes fatal
Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis)
Pathogen - Gram negative rods
Symptoms - Buboes (enlarged hemorrhagic nodes), blackened skin, pneumonia, meningitis, if in lungs, death is imminent
Plague (Yersinia pestis)
Pathogen - Gram negative coccobacillus
Symptoms - Zoonotic (arthropod vectors), if through skin, high fever, chills, shaking, buboes, ulcer at entry site, if through lungs, pneumonia
Tularemia (Francisella tularensis)
Pathogen - Gram negative, coccobacillus, facultative intracellular
Symptoms - Zoonotic (can enter almost any way from animals), Granulomas in heart tissue, high fever during day, sweating, enlarged spleen/lymph nodes/liver, chronic aches, nervousness, endocarditis
Brucellosis (Brucella spp.)
Pathogen - Gram negative spirochete
Symptoms - Zoonotic (from arthropods), Chills, high fever
Relapsing Fever (Borrelia spp.)
Pathogen - Gram negative spirochete
Symptoms - From ticks, flu-like symptoms, Bullseye rash, can lead to arthritis, myocarditis, neuropathies
Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi)
Pathogen - Pleomorphic gram negative bacteria
Symptoms - acute fever, headache, muscle pain, rash, often from rats to humans via ticks or louses
Typhus Fever (Rickettsia spp.)
Pathogen - Pleomorphic gram negative bacteria
Symptoms - From tick bite, long incubation, fever, and rash
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (Rickettsia rickettsiae)
Pathogen - Pleomorphic gram negative bacteria
Symptoms - From rat bites, enlarged lymph nodes, chills fever, and headache
Rickettsialpox (rickettsia akari)
Pathogen - Viral
Symptoms - High fever, sever bone and joint pain, headache, anorexia, weakness
Dengue Fever/Breakbone Fever (Arbovirus)
