T cells and cell mediated immunity Flashcards
Question: What is the primary function of T lymphocytes in the immune response?
Answer: T lymphocytes primarily respond to an organism’s own cells that have been invaded by non-self (foreign) material, such as viruses or cancer cells. They also respond to transplanted material that is genetically different.
Question: What type of immune response is associated with T lymphocytes?
Answer: The immune response mediated by T lymphocytes is referred to as cell-mediated immunity.
Question: What is the significance of T lymphocytes being referred to as antigen-presenting cells?
Answer: T lymphocytes are called antigen-presenting cells because they have the capability to present antigens from other cells on their own cell-surface membrane. This allows them to communicate with other immune cells and coordinate an appropriate response to the presence of foreign material or transplanted cells.
Where are T-cells are produced and collected?
in bone marrow and collect in the thymus
Question: What is the role of T suppressor cells in the immune response?
turn off the actions of the various other lymphocytes once the
pathogens have been eliminated from the body
What are 3 types of of T lymphocytes?
T helper cells
T killer cells (T cytotoxic cells)
T suppressor cells
Question: How do the structures of T cell receptors on membranes compare to antibodies, and what is their specificity?
like antibodies, specific to one
antigen
