t10-haber process Flashcards
what is the forward reaction of the haber process
exothermic
where is nitrogen taken from for the haber process
the air
where is hydrogen taken from in the haber process
natural gas (methane)
what is ammonia used for
nitrogen based fertilisers for growing food
describe the process
- H2+N2 are put into the reaction vessel in the presence of an iron catalyst
2.reaction vessel has conditions 450degrees and 200atm
3.ammonia is made. it has a low BP
4.mixture of N2+H2 and ammonia goes into condenser, which is colder.
5.ammonia turns gaseous and condenses into liquid ammonia - H2+N2 stay gaseous as they have higher BPs
7.N2+H2 are recycled back to the reaction vessel to be reused
how was the temperature for the process chosen
% yield
-low temperature achieves a higher yield because forward reaction is exothermic
RoR
–high temperatures achieves a higher RoR; particles have more frequent collisions
cost
-high temp uses more energy so cost increases
Compromise
-temp is chosen between rate and yield
how was the pressure for the process chosen
% yield
-high pressure achieves higher yield because there are fewer product molecules
RoR
-high pressure gives higher RoR because there are more frequent collisions
cost
-high pressure needs more energy so costs increase
Compromise
-chosen temp between rate and yield
