Q

Why does thermal stability of carbonates/nitrates in goup 2 increase down the group ?

A
  • G2 has a large charge
  • larger radius
  • so lower charge density
  • hence the weaker the polarising power
  • attracts the bodning electrons in the negative ion less strongly.
  • will distort the lecton cloud less
  • makes it hardre to break apart and decompose.
