Task 2 Oral Defense Flashcards

1
Q

What information did you need before you began your research, and how did that information shape your research?

A

I needed to know what a whistleblower is and does because knew it had been mentioned during our harkness discussion so it inspired me to learn more about it and I found that many whistleblowers inherit the trait of moral courage so that made me want to find how their courage can benefit the people

Q

What evidence did you gather that you didn’t use? Why did you choose not to use it?

A

In my essay, I researched a lot about how whistleblowing can also help companies and organizations financially, however, I didn’t use it because I wanted to focus on a more specific area for my presentation which was the social benefits for the people

Q

How valid and reliable are the sources you used? How do you know? Which sources didn’t work?

A

All of my sources are academically peer reviewed except for the stimulus source. I used mackinvia one file to filter to make sure all of the sources that I used were peer reviewed, so there weren’t any sources that didn’t work in my research.

Q

How did you select the strategies you used to gather information or conduct research?
Were they effective?

A

When I started my annotated bibliography, I wanted to make sure that I found sources that would help me conduct my outline for my essay, so I decided to plan out what type of sources I wanted to use early on and that way researching for this made it a lot easier to find sources and organize my work

Q

Did your research go in a different direction than you originally planned/hypothesized?

A

My research at first had the counter argument as its own perspective, but I learned that my essay would be stronger if I added a counterargument for each lens, so because I did this, i added a new lens as a third perspective which was the economic lens

Q

How did your research question evolve as you moved through the research process?

A

My research question evolved as I learned more about what a whistleblower is. I wanted my research question to relate to how whistleblowers affect citizens, so at first my research question was “how do the decisions of whistleblowers affect citizens” however I changed it to “How does courage against unethical government behavior positively impact society today? because it helped support what my argument was

Q

What information did you need that you weren’t able to find or locate? How did you go about trying to find that information?

A

Some information that I needed that I couldn’t find was—–. I tried through mackinvia one file to find articles about it, but none of the articles that I found were credible enough or peer reviewed, so I decided to cut that out from my research.

Q

How did you handle the differing perspectives in order to reach a conclusion?

A

I used a political, social, and economic lens to show how having the courage to stand up against unethical government behavior is beneficial to society in all of these aspects.

Q

What additional questions emerged from your research? Why are these questions important?

A

One question that emerged from my research was “How can communities empower whistleblowers to continue to report wrongdoings” this was important to know because even in the face of retaliation, speaking out and acting upon something does something more than doing nothing, so encouraging whistleblowers would help build confidence in these people

Q

What advice would you have for other researchers who consider this topic?

A

I would tell other researchers who consider this topic to research the futuristic lens. I think this would be beneficial for them to know because it would show how the changes in the relation between the government and the people

Q

What might be the real-world implications or consequences (influence on others’ behaviors or decision-making processes) of your findings? What are the implications to your community?

A

Some implications to my communities that I found in my findings is that acting upon a gov. misconduct and speaking out about unethical practices has a bigger impact than not doing anything at all. For example, in my presentation I mention the edward snowden situation and even though he faced massive retaliation for what he had done because it was illegal, the people were now aware of what the government did and now the government is facing the people’s protests. So I think that even speaking out about something with courage is the best thing a citizen can do for society.

Q

How does your conclusion respond to any of the other research or sources you examined?

A

One source in my essay includes information about employees standing up to unethical practices against companies or organizations and even though my topic was over unethical government behavior, it still connects to my conclusion and proves that anyone should be encouraged to act upon any unethical practices

Q

How did you use the conclusions and questions of others to advance your own research?

A

I used feedback about my context because at first I didn’t have much background information, but I was inspired to use definitions of some of the key words, like corruption and moral courage to give an idea of what my presentation was going to cover overall
