TAXONOMY Flashcards
Define Taxonomy
The branch of biology is concerned with identifying, naming, and classifying.
Define Taxon
A group containing an organism or group of organisms that exhibit a set of shared traits.
Define Classification.
Process of naming and assigning organisms or groups of organisms to a taxon.
What is the aim of Taxonomy?
- To classify all living things on earth.
- Related on physical characteristics to classify organisms.
- Today organisms are classified into natural groups based on their evolutionary history by constructing a evolutionary family tree.
Characteristics shared by bacteria and Archaea.
- Absence of a nucleus
- Presence of ribosomes
- Absence of membrane-bound organelles
- Presence of a cell wall
Least/Less inclusive level to most inclusive level of classification. Along with the Linnaean Category.
- Species- Sapiens
- Genus- Homo
- Family- Hominidae
- Order- Primate
- Class- Mammalia
- Phylum- Chordata
- Kingdom- Animalia
- Domain- Eukarya
Examples of Prokaryotes.
- Domain Bacteria
- Domain Archaea
Domain Archaea
- unicellular organisms that produce asexually.
- they live in extreme conditions
Examples of Archaea
- Methanogens (anaerobic swamps)
- Halophiles (salt lakes)
- Thermoacidophiles ( hot acidic environment)
Examples of Eukaryotes.
-Domain Eukarya
Domain Bacteria
- Unicellular organisms
- Break down organic remains
Examples of Bacteria
- Cyanobacteria (Photosynthetic)
- Heterotrophic bacteria
- Parasitic bacteria ( cause diseases)
Domain Eukarya
- unicellular or multicellular
- membrane-bound nucleus
- Sexual reproduction.
Examples of Eukarya
Kingdoms;
- Protista
- Fungi
- Animalia
- Plantae
The cell wall of Bacteria and Archaea
The cell wall is diverse but different bacteria have peptidoglycan and archaea don’t have peptidoglycan.
