Terminology Flashcards
Accuracy
How close a measure is to the true value
Repproducibility
If you can get similar results when trying to reproduce your investigation under equivalent (but not identical) conditions. It is reproduceable
Precision
Precise measurements are ones where there is little range about the true results
Repeatability
A measurement is ‘repeatable’ when a repetition under the same conditions gives the same or similar results
Resolution
The smallest change in the quantity being measured of a measuring instrument that gives a perceptible change in the reading
Measurement error
The difference between a measurement value and the true value
Random error
Can cause readings to be spread about the true value due to results varying in an unpredictable from one measurement to the next
Systematic error
Can cause readings to differ from the true value by a consistent amount each time a measurement is made.
True value
The value that would be obtained in a ideal measurement
Independent variable
The variables that are changed
