PREGNANCY SAFETY CATEGORY
Category A
May give these medications safely to pregnant women; studies indicate no risk to the human fetus.
Category B
Studies indicate no risk to the animal fetus; information for humans is not available.
Category C
Adverse effect reported in animal fetus; no information available in humans
Category D
Possible fetal risk in humans reported. Use may be warrented in pregnant women based on risk vs. benefit.
Category X
These drugs are not to be used in pregnant women.
Enteral Administration
Deliverde through atube to the stomach or the small intestine; involves the GI system.
Parenteral Administration
Enters the body from other parts other the GI system. Ex: Immunizations.
Adverse Effect
Undesirable effects that are a direct response from administrating a medication.
Bioavailability
A measure of the extent of drug absorption.
Contraindication
Any condition, especially one related to a disease state or other client characteristic, that may mak eadministration of a medication undesirable.
Duration of Action
The length of time the concentration of a drug in the blood or tissues is sufficient to elicit a response.
First Pass Effect
The initial metabolism in the liver of the drug absorbed from the GI tract before the drug reaches systemic circulation through the blood stream.
Idiosyncratic Reaction
Any abnormal and unexpected response to a medication that is peculiar to an individual client.
