Definition: Figure of speech using deliberate exaggeration or overstatement
Purpose: Have a comic/serious effect and produce irony
Ex. I have a mountain load of homework
Hyperbole
Definition: Sensory details or figurative language used to describe, arouse emotion, or represent abstractions
Purpose: Create a vivid image

Imagery
Definition: To draw reasonable conclusions from the info presented
Purpose: Allows reader to think for themselves of a reasonable conclusion

Inference (Infer)
Definition: An emotionally violent, verbal denunciation or attack using strong, abusive language
Purpose: Denounce the opponent/subject
**Ex. **
Invective
Definition: Contrasts b/w what is explicitly stated and what is meant
- Verbal - Words literally state opposite of writer’s meaning
- Situational - Events are opposite of what is expected
- Dramatic - Reader knows more than character
Purpose: Point out contradiction, build suspense/humor

Irony (Ironic)
Definition: Type of sentence in which the main idea (independent clause) comes before grammatical dependent units
Purpose: Informal, relaxed, conversational tone

Loose Sentence
Definition: Figure of speech implied comparison of seemingly unlike things, suggesting similarity
Purpose: Writing more vivid, imaginative, thought provoking, and meaningful

Metaphor
Definition: Replace noun/thing with something associated with it
Purpose: Help connect with audience and simplify words
Ex. US Government <—> White House
Metonymy
**Definition: **
- Indictive - used only for statements
- Subjunctive - used for doubtful/conditional attitude
- Imperative - used for commands
Purpose: Sets tone of speaker

Mood
Definition: Telling of a story or an account of an event
Purpose: Tell a story

Narrative
Definition: Figure of speech in which natural sounds are imitated in the sounds of words
Purpose: Describe a sound and give emphasis to a reader’s imagination

Onomatopoeia
Definition: Figure of speech where the author groups apparantly contradictory terms to suggest a paradox
Purpose: Make language more interesting. Strengthen previous statement or emphasize absurdness
