Terms & Meanings Flashcards
Theme
-an idea or topic laid down for discussion (piece of writing, characters etc…)
-“Title” can also be a Theme
Example: “F.R.I.E.N.D.S.” (Its about a group of friends)
Genre
- Category, Style, or Type of art
- Draws out an emotional response
Example: “Good Will Hunting”= Drama
Unit
-Division of action within a play/scene Clues to Unit... -character enters/exits -change O' topic -External event -Internal Event -action change[both characters are doing changes]
External Event
Something happening outside of characters
Example: Car crashes outside of the restaurant
Internal Event
Something happening within the character
Example: Headache, Backpain etc…
Beat
- a shift that doesn’t affect any other characters but one
* Sometimes they can be a clue to the story/situation (emotional/physical)
Objective
-a characters wants/needs
Super Objective
-a characters greater wants/needs relating to Entire Script
Scene Objective
-a characters greater wants/needs relating to a Scene
Actions
- “What I DO to get what I want.”
- also sometimes (usually most of the time) Tactics are used to obtain objectives
Tactic
-strategy used to obtain objectives Example: "Mom I want a cookie." I_(verb)_. "I hate you."> I punish -Tactic/Verb can be used before and/or after (I charm)"Yes, I said that."(I agree)
Obstacle
-“What stands in the way of getting what I want?” (the character)
Example:”Mom I want a cookie.”
Mom= Obstacle
Story
- description or narrative (real or imaginary) of events/ series of events
- journey of a character/s
- can be high stakes, or self discovery (for character’s journey)
