John 1:4-5 states “In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in
the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”. Using a model from class lectures,

explain the difference between the light and darkness.

A

Using the I-centered model vs. God-
centered model. I-centered is darkness because it is limited – limited by age, experiences,

formal knowledge, etc. God-centered is light because it connects you with all the He has
created – if you choose to seek it.

a model from class lectures, explain what the verse means about being “born”.

A

The model that
illustrates that “you” were born of God prior to your physical birth and “you” will exist in
eternity after your physical death.

In Acts 17:23 Paul states “as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I
even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as
something unknown I am going to proclaim to you.” What were the nine (9) proclamations
about God made by Paul?

A

God made the world
God made everything in the world
God is the Lord (the authority) of heaven and earth
God does NOT live in temples built by human hands (meaning that God does NOT only
matter when we choose to think about Him. God’s power and truth exists whether
humans pay attention to it or even believe in it).
God is NOT served by human hands
God gives humans life and breath and everything else
From one man God made every nation of man and they should inhabit the Earth
God determined the times set for them
God determined the exact places where they should live
NOTE: Because God determined the times set for them and exact places where
they should live NOTHING is circumstantial. Therefore, each moment of the day
is an opportunity to discover what God has for us in relation to the situations we
are in and the people who are in those situations…. If we (see the next question)

Q

How does Acts 1:7 describe “where” the disciples would be sent?

A

First where they are
(Jerusalem) and then to their larger area (Judea) and then stretching the part of the world
where they were located (Samaria) and then to the ends of the Earth

30
Q

How does that help us, in knowing how and where we are to answer the call of Jesus?

A

We are
to answer the call of God (the “how”) by loving God and others. Where we are to do this is first
with ourselves, then our family, friends, co-workers, etc.; as we graduate we expand out into
the community and then further into the world

31
Q

Following this instruction to his disciples, how did Jesus empower them?

A

With the Holy Spirit

32
Q

Does Jesus empower us the same way?

A

yes

33
Q

In thinking about the instructions Jesus gave His disciples, what did He mean when saying “if you
forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

A

If
the disciples couldn’t forgive the Jewish leaders, the people who didn’t defend Jesus, and the
Romans then they wouldn’t be able to follow Jesus’ call to love them.

34
Q

In John 2:4, what did Jesus mean when replying to his mother “why do you involve me? My time has not yet come”?

A

Jesus had a specific time frame in which to share the gospel before being revealed as the Messiah. Because once he was revealed as the Messiah, he knew that he would be persecuted on the cross.

35
Q

When Jesus changed the water into wine, what was significant about the quality of the wine?

A

That it was of high quality; the best of the evening. Demonstrating that we are to give our very best in whatever it is that we do.

36
Q

When Jesus changed the water into wine, who received the credit for doing so?

A

The bridegroom. Jesus demonstrates that we are to do our best to support others with our gifts and

37
Q

What was the reason that the people were selling in the temple courts?

A

They were part of a system that provided “official” items of sacrifice to be offered in the temple. The moneychangers were able to convert foreign money so that an even bigger profit can be made.

38
Q

What are two of the ways that the marketplace allows the Jewish leaders to keep control of the people?

A

a. It forces the people to be in accordance with the Jewish leaders by only selecting the official items they allow to be sold
b. If individuals were not purchasing items to be sacrificed, the leaders could question their commitment

39
Q

Why didn’t the moneychangers and the sales people fight back against Jesus overturning their tables?

A

Because they knew that what they were doing was wrong

40
Q

What word was used by the disciples to describe the passion Jesus felt about the need to protect “His Father’s house”?

A

Zeal

41
Q

What is significant about the Jews demanding of Jesus “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all of this?”

A

That they recognized His authority, but they wanted to see where it came from so that they can determine what to do.

42
Q

When Jesus replied to the Jews in John 2:19 “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days” what did He mean?

A

He was referencing His own death and resurrection

43
Q

What was the feast that followed Jesus clearing the temple courts?

A

Passover

44
Q
  1. As a result of Jesus’ teachings and miraculous signs during this feast, many believed in Him. But even though they believed in Him, John 2:24-25 states “But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.” What is in all humans that Jesus is referring to?
A

That they are self-centered. In light of this specific situation, the self-centeredness of humans will show in their being fickle. For instance, they are supportive of Jesus when he is doing miracles / preaching a message that they like. Yet, they are not supportive of Him when they don’t like what He is calling them to do or has a message that they don’t want to hear.

45
Q

Who is the member of the Jewish ruling council that came to see Jesus?

A

Nicodemus

46
Q

What is significant about the member of the Jewish ruling council coming to see Jesus at night?

A

Nicodemus wanted to protect himself. On one hand, he wanted to investigate to see if Jesus really was the Messiah. On the other hand, if Jesus wasn’t the Messiah, he didn’t want the other members of the council to see him speaking with Jesus.

47
Q

In John 3:3 when the member of the Jewish council asked Jesus about what God was doing through Him, Jesus stated that “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is _____ _____.”

A

born again

48
Q

When the member of the Jewish ruling council asked “how can this be….we surely cannot enter a second time into a mother’s womb”, Jesus stated “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of ______ and _____.”

A

water and spirit

49
Q

What example from nature did Jesus use to illustrate this teaching about being born again?

A

To focus on the effects of being Born Again in the spirit just like the effects of the wind. You don’t see the wind, but see and feel the effects of the wind.

50
Q

Write out John 3:16

A

“For God so loved the world He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

51
Q

John 3:17, Jesus stated that “For God did not send His Son into the world to ____ the world, but to ___ the world through Him.”

A

condemn, save

52
Q

In John 3:19, Jesus concludes “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of the light because their deeds were evil.” Use the “Law of Gravity” example given in class to explain how humans determine the outcome of this verdict by their choices.

A

God has provided the opportunity to learn of His truth to everyone. God allows people to choose to accept it or not during this physical life. If people choose to remain ignorant or arrogant of His truth, they will suffer the consequence of their ignorance/arrogance both in their physical life and throughout eternity.

53
Q

Why were the disciples of John the Baptist upset about others going to Jesus for baptism?

A

Because they felt threatened by Jesus taking over what they felt was their purpose.

54
Q

What statement does John the Baptist make that illustrates his understanding of servant leadership.

A

In John 3:30, he states “He must become greater; I must become less.”

55
Q

John the Baptist replied to his disciples in John 3:27 “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.” Use the competition vs. co-operation models to contrast what John the Baptist’s disciples wanted and what John the Baptist was teaching them.

A

John the Baptist teaches that each person has a role to play and is given the talent to do so.

a. We are not in competition with others to see who gets to play the roles, or who gets credit for the roles they play. Nor are we in competition with ourselves and others to see if we are “better” or “worse” in order to determine how we feel about ourselves.
b. We are ALL called to feel “good” about ourselves because of how God made us and has given us each day. We are equally loved by God through the gifts and calling he uniquely gives to each of us. We are to see ourselves and others through the HUMILITY that we are equal to everyone else in this call and in the fact that we are ALL sinful.

56
Q

In Romans 13:1, Paul teaches that “The ___ that exist have been established by God.”

A

authorities

57
Q

In Romans 13:2, Paul teaches that “He who rebels against authority” are “bringing
___” upon themselves.

A

judgement

58
Q

If you look at authority from an I-centered perspective, what are the two views that an individual has towards their authority?

A

a. The authority will give me what I want

b. The authority can prevent me from getting what I want

59
Q

If you look at authority from a God-centered perspective, explain how each encounter with authority (not just people, but commitments, roles, etc) is an opportunity. Use the model that illustrates how each choice we make determines our future surroundings.

A

God shows us what He has planned for us each day IF we are willing to accept that God has placed the authority of each role we are in and we discover what God has for us by fulfilling the responsibilities of the roles we are in from moment to moment.
The choice model illustrates that how we accept what God wants us to do in each moment will reflect what the next moment will look like (where our mind & emotions will be focused on / along with the people and circumstances we find ourselves in).
a. If we choose to follow what God calls us to do in each moment, then we can praise Him or learn from Him in each subsequent moment.
b. If we choose to do what we want to do, we find ourselves living in the consequences of the arrogant/ignorant law example from above.

60
Q

In John 4, where did Jesus meet up with the Samaritan woman?

A

Jacob’s well

61
Q

Why was the Samaritan woman surprised that Jesus was speaking with her?

A

Because the Jews and Samaritans chose to separate themselves and not associate with one another over past disputes.

62
Q

How does the Samaritan woman’s circumstances illustrate what she was “thirsty for” and why she would be “thirsty again”?

A

Due to the number of spouses, the Samaritan woman was trying to finding satisfaction (quench her “thirst”) through the different relationships she was in. Because no one is perfect, the result would be her continual search for “someone else” that would bring her satisfaction.

63
Q

What is the living water that Jesus will provide?

A

Our relationship with God will bring everlasting satisfaction. Through Jesus, God will provide all that we need and ever hope for.

64
Q

How did Jesus’ communication with the Samaritan woman illustrate how to have a healthy, loving relationship, rather than the type of “love & relationships” she was used to?

A

Jesus taught that love is giving and sacrificial – focused upon others rather than ourselves. That this love is not about what we GET from it, but rather how others benefit when we follow the ways of love in 1 Corinthians 13. Jesus further teaches that because He love us even though we don’t deserve it; we are not to withhold our love from others.

65
Q

In John 4:19, the Samaritan woman wanted to know why their ancestors worshipped on the mountain while the Jews claimed they must worship in Jerusalem. In response, Jesus stated “A time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in _____ and ____.”

A

spirit and truth

66
Q

In response to Jesus’ teaching, the Samaritan woman stated that “I know that the ____ is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

A

messiah

67
Q

What was the result of the Samaritan woman going back to her town and telling them about her encounter with Jesus?

A

Many in the town came to hear Jesus themselves and ended up being saved and following Him.

68
Q

Why were Jesus’ disciples surprised that he was talking with the Samaritan woman?

A

Because they thought the association with the Samaritan woman would make him look bad in front the Jews while he was preaching the gospel (because Jews didn’t associate with Samaritans).

69
Q

When the Samaritan woman left, the disciples urged Jesus to eat something. How did Jesus respond to them?

A

He explained that his food (which He meant as His nourishment) didn’t come from physical food, but rather by doing the will of God (which was to love others and tell them about God).

70
Q

How does Jesus’ response to them show us how to be fulfilled in life?

A

That when we are loving God and loving others we won’t feel lost or in need (physical, emotional, etc.)
