Parts of speech:
Nouns
Name a person, place, or thing.
Can be classified 4 ways.
- Proper nouns - Iroquois Falls
- Concrete nouns - table, house, dog
- Abstract nound - sadness, fear, self-esteem
- Collective nouns - team, group, class
Parts of speech:
Pronouns
A word that take the place of a noun.
7 main pronoun types:
- Personal
- Relative
- Interrogative
- Demonstrative
- Indefinite
- Reflexive
- Intensive
Parts of speech:
Verbs
Express action, occurence, or state of being.
TENSE - time frame of sentence
MOOD - indicates writer’s intent
VOICE - indicates whether the subject is the doer or topic of the action or the receiver of the action

Adjectives
Words that modify, describe, or limit nouns, pronouns, or other words that function as nouns.
Parts of speech:
Adverbs
Words that describe or limit verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.
Answers the questions: Where? When? Why? How?
2 types of adverbs
- Descriptive
- Conjunctive
Parts of speech:
Conjunctions
Connect words, phrases, or clauses and while doing so, they signal a relationship.
There are 4 types of conjunctions:
- Coordinating conjunctions - FANBOYS
- Correlative - paired words that also join sentence parts of equal value. EX. Neither….Nor, Whether….or, Both….And, etc…
- Subordinate - word that introduces a subordinate clause and indicates a relationship to the rest of the sentence. EX. after, although, as, because, before, if, etc…
- Transitional or Conjunctive Adverb - a word that joins two independent clauses together. It indicates a relationship between the two clauses.
Identifying Clauses:
Independent Clause
A simple sentence that has a subject(s) and a verb(s).
Identifying Clauses:
Compound Sentence
Contains two or more independent clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction or a semicolon.
Identify Clauses:
Complex Sentence
Consists of one independent clause and one or more subordinate or dependent clauses.
How to identify the VERB.
Find the verb by asking “What is happening?” or “What is?”.
How to identify the SUBJECT.
Find the subject by asking “who?” or “what?” before the verb.
How to identify OBJECTS.
Find the object by asking “who/whom?” or “what?” after the verb.
Identify SUBJECTIVE COMPLETIONS.
A noun or pronoun that completes the meaning of a linking verb such as “to become” or some form of the verb “to be”.
Appositives
A noun, noun phrase, or pronoun that renames a nearby noun or pronoun.
