TEST 2 Flashcards
display rules
differences in how we manage our facial expressions according to social and cultural expectations
- sometimes social norms dictate when emotional displays should be suppressed
evolution
change in characteristics of species over time
natural selection
evolutionary process
heritable traits that are best for roagnisms to survive. reporduce are passed to ensuing generations
evolutionary psych
study of evolution of cognition and behavior using principles of natural selection
genetic drift
a random event in nature that influences or changes genetic frequency within a population REGARDLESS of whether they are beneficial traits
bottleneck effect
- type of genetic drift
when there is a sudden decline in population size due to random event ((natural disasters) that can reduce the number of ind. in the population - small surviving pop is considerably farther from the original one in its genetic makeup
founder effect
- type of genetic drift
loss of genetic variation. occurs when a new population is established by a small number of ind. that are separate (ex. geographical or socially isolated) from a larger population.
new population doesn’t have genetic diversity of the previous one. some genetic tratis become more prevalent
ex. amish
(ex. effects from inbreeding)
conformity
change in belief, behavior, or emotional reaction as the result of real or imagined group pressure
three varieties :
acceptance
compliance
obedience
acceptance
variety of conformity
acting and believing in accord with social pressure, believing the group is right
compliance
variety of conformity
publicly acting in accord with an implied or explicit request while privately disagreeing
obedience
variety of conformity
acting in accord with a direct order or command
autokinetic phenomenon
self (auto) motion (kinetic) the apparent movement of a stationary point of light in the dark
