what is a covenant?
an agreement, promise or contract where both sides have mutual obligations and responsibilities
what are some examples of jewish covenants?
the story of Noah and the flood
the sacrifice of issac

why is Noah and the flood covenantal?
because Noah does what god says and god promises not to flood the earth again and the rainbow is the sign of the covenant established between god and Noah
why is the sacrifice of Issac covenantal?
because Abraham listens to god and shows his loyalty to god by sacrificing his son Issac, by Abraham realizing there is a higher duty than his duty he has to his son. the relationship between Abraham and god is another sight of the covenant
what is the importance of covenant to the Jewish people?
the covenant is important to jewish people because at the heart of judaism there is a covenant between god and the jewish people the covenantal experiences that happen symbolize the agreement between god and the jewish people that they are the chosen people of god
what is a structure of a covenant?
normally there something that the people have to do to show their loyalty to god and normally there is a potential punishment and then there is a sign of the covenant at the end of the event ( a rainbow in Noah and the flood and the substitution of Issac for the ram in the sacrifice of Issac)
what was ritual life like before the destruction of the second temple?
before the destruction of the second temple you needed to be at a temple to worship god and practice your faith
how did the destruction of the second temple effect ritual life in judaism?
after the destruction of the second temple the ritual life shifted away from needing to be at a worship site to worship. due to the diaspora after the destruction of the second temple many jews did not have access to a worship site so it shifted the idea that temple life was necessary to practice your faith. you were able to practice judaism without having access to a worship site. if you did not have access to a worship site the importance shifted from the worship site to the torah, making judaism more accessable. if you lived near a worship site temple life was still central
explain how ritual life is always evolving in judaism?
for both Reform Judaism and conservative judaism the ritual life has always been changing to adapt to the modern way of life
why has ritual life in reform judaism changed?
ritual life changed in Reform Judaism so it was able to adapt to the life around the people who believed in Reform Judaism.

complete dropping of dietary laws
synagogues adapted the vernacular language of where it was located
adopted the orgon in the jewish religious services

why did conservative judaism change its ritual life?
because they wanted to reflect what id was like to be a jew in America, it holds tradition but allows certain aspects of modernity
what is the east-west (great) schism ?
the it was a Theo-political break from the church of constinople and the roman Catholic Church , the church of constinople split from the roman catholic church and created their own independent church
what caused the great schism?
the church of Constantinople started to question the authority of the pope, due to the questioning of the pope, the patriarch of Constantinople finds himself in a battle with the pope over jurisdiction and theological ideas, the nature of the theological claim and the way it was handled between Rome and constanople caused the conflict to hit their high, this causes the roman church to kick the patriarch of constanopel out of the Roman Catholic Church. in return the patriarch of constanople kicked the pope out of the church of Constantinople. thus causes the independent church of constantanople to form
why is the great schism a Theo-political break?
it was concerted a theo-political break because the theological part is the disagreement about theological principals and the political part is the disagreement over power and jurisdiction.
