Test #3- Metabolism Flashcards
Metabolism definition
The process of breaking down and making Proteins, Lipids, & Carbohydrates
Catabolism & Anabolism
Breaking down
Making
Why do we eat?
2nd law of thermodynamics: everything tends to move towards a state of disorder
What prevents you from decaying?
Energy input
What is the bodies goal for digestion of carbs, proteins, & lipids?
To get ATP
Glycolysis
- A series of 10 reactions in which glucose is broken down by having hydrogen removed until we have 2 Pyruvate
- The hydrogen is placed onto NAD, forming NADH
- 2 ATP are produced
- this occurs in the Cytoplasm
- Anaerobic reaction (oxygen not required)
Where does glycolysis occur?
In the cytoplasm
Where does Anaerobic Reaction take place?
Glycolysis
Krebs Cycle
- Aerobic (Oxygen required to take Pyruvate into mitochondria)
- Occurs in Matrix of mitochondria
- Pyruvate is broken down by having hydrogen ripped off until only CO2 is left
- The hydrogen is placed on NAD & FAD, forming NADH & FADH
- 2 ATP are made
Where does Krebs cycle occur?
Matrix of mitochondria
Where does Aerobic reaction take place?
Krebs Cycle & Electron Transport
Electron Transport
- Aerobic & Oxygen used directly in the reactions
- Takes place across inner mitochondria membrane
- H are removed from NADH & FADH & placed onto oxygen, creating water
- 34 ATP are made
- NAD & FAD are reused in glycolysis & Krebs
Where does electron transport take place?
Across inner mitochondria membrane
Oxygen is the ____
Ultimate electron receptor
Where does CO2 come from?
Krebs Cycle
