The Adrenal Gland Flashcards
What are glucocorticoids?
-regulates glucose + protein metabolism and blood pressure
-suppresses inflammatory response
What does the adrenal cortex do?
-receives messages from hormones sent by the pituitary gland
What 3 hormones are secreted by the cortex?
- glucocorticoids
- mineralcorticoids
- androgens
What is cortisol?
-regulates glucose + protein metabolism + blood pressure
What is corticosterone?
-regulates immune responses
-suppresses inflammatory responses
What are 2 examples of glucocorticoids?
- cortisol
- corticosterone
What are mineralcorticoids?
-maintain salt concentration to control BP
What is an example of mineralcorticoids?
- aldosterone
What are androgens?
-sex hormones with little effect
What hormones are released by the cortex?
-steroid hormones
What hormones are released by the medulla?
-peptide hormones
When are peptide hormones secreted?
-when sympathetic nervous system stimulates medulla
What 2 peptide hormones does the medulla secrete?
- adrenaline
- noradrenaline
What does adrenaline do?
-increase heart rate + BGL
What does noradrenaline do?
-dilate pupils
-constrict vessels to non-essential organs
